Two brothers have been arrested in Odisha's Bhadrak district for allegedly showing their mother as dead in official records and transferring her house and land to their names, police said. The case surfaced after 60-year-old Aisha Bibi began a hunger strike outside the office of the Bhadrak Superintendent of Police on Friday, seeking restoration of her property. Aisha, a resident of Habib Nagar in the Dhamnagar police station area, alleged that her husband and two sons were part of a conspiracy to deny her and her daughters their share in the property. Police later assured her that action would be taken against all those found involved, following which she ended her protest.
Read Full Story In her complaint, Aisha alleged that while she was away on a pilgrimage in 2023, her two sons filed an affidavit stating that she had died about 40 years ago. She said the affidavit also falsely claimed that she had no daughters. Aisha said she has six daughters and alleged that the process was carried out deliberately to deprive her and her daughters of their rightful share. She alleged that on the basis of that affidavit, the Dhamnagar revenue inspector submitted a report declaring her dead. After that, her name was removed from the relevant land records and her house and other property were transferred to the names of her two sons.
After learning about the alleged changes in the records, Aisha approached Dhamnagar police station on July 10 and lodged a complaint against her two sons, their wives and the revenue inspector. She alleged that no concrete action was taken for 18 days despite the complaint. The matter later reached Bhadrak SP Manoj Kumar Rout, who directed police to take appropriate legal action. Additional SP Arup Avishek Behera said the woman had alleged that her husband and two sons had shown her as deceased in the land records, because of which her name was left out during the mutation process. "On July 27, a case was registered at the Dhamnagar police station, and an investigation was initiated.
The documents produced before the police indicated that the land had been registered in the names of the accused by declaring Aisha as deceased," Behera said. Dhamnagar inspector-in-charge Subrata Das said police had arrested Aisha's elder son, Sk Taufiq, and younger son, SK Mujaidin. The case centres on allegations that Aisha was falsely declared dead and her property was transferred, after which police registered a case, began an investigation and made two arrests.
