(Image: AP) As tensions over former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s stay in India continue, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday told India’s High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi that Dhaka and New Delhi need to create a “conducive environment" to strengthen bilateral ties. Rahman’s remarks came during his first meeting with Trivedi and underline his si month-old government’s efforts to stabilise relations with Bangladesh’s largest neighbour while seeking progress on issues that have remained contentious since Hasina’s ouster in August 2024. Dhaka Seeks Hasina’s Extradition The Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Office said Rahman “emphasized the need to create a conducive environment to further advance the bilateral relations between the two countries". Bangladesh also urged India to expedite Hasina’s extradition, it said. Hasina has been living in India since her government fell.

She faces legal proceedings in Bangladesh and was sentenced to death in November. Dhaka’s latest request came days after Hasina interacted with the media for the first time since fleeing Bangladesh. During an online audio conference, she reiterated that she would return to Bangladesh in December. Her continued presence and political activities in India have renewed tensions between the two countries. The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry strongly criticised the event, saying that allowing Hasina to hold it was deeply hurtful and that Bangladesh was outraged. India has said it is examining Bangladesh’s extradition request in accordance with its legal and judicial procedures. India Stresses Positive Engagement The Indian High Commission said on X that Trivedi reiterated India’s commitment to working with Bangladesh in a “positive, constructive and forward-looking manner". The envoy’s meeting with Rahman came a day after he held a one-on-one meeting with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman. The foreign minister was also present during Monday’s meeting with the prime minister. The diplomatic engagements come amid renewed strain in India-Bangladesh ties following Hasina’s virtual address from New Delhi on August 5, marking the second anniversary of her ouster after a student-led uprising in 2024.
