(AFP Photo) India made a commanding start to the U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Lagos, Nigeria, winning 17 medals, including four gold, on the opening day. The Indian contingent finished the first day with four gold, four silver and nine bronze medals at the championship, which began on Sunday and is scheduled to continue until August 14.

India’s dominance was evident across the individual events, with at least one Indian fencer securing a podium finish in each of the six events across the Sabre, Foil and Epee disciplines, according to a release from the Fencing Association of India. Nikhil Wagh led India’s charge in the men’s Sabre, winning the gold medal. Lakshay Badser claimed silver, while Ashwini Arya and Laishram Moramba took bronze, giving India all four podium places in the event. In the men’s Foil, Tejas Patil won silver and Hemash Sanasam secured bronze. Lokesh Vemani added another silver in the men’s Epee, while Shaurya Ashwini and Godwin Anbkess won bronze. The Indian women also enjoyed a strong showing, claiming gold in two of the three individual categories.

Joys Ashita won the women’s Foil gold, with teammate Kanaglakshmi taking silver. Prachi Lohan secured gold in the women’s Epee, while Nivedhya Nair and Anupriya collected bronze medals. In the women’s Sabre, Jeferlin won gold and Aakhari took silver, while Shreya Gupta completed the women’s medal haul with a bronze. Fencing Association of India Secretary General Shri Rajeev Mehta congratulated the Indian contingent for its performance. “I extend my heartiest congratulations to all our medal winners, coaches, support staff, and families for their relentless dedication and contribution to India’s remarkable performance," Mehta said.
