(Reuters photo) Thai lawmaker Chalong Reawraeng was arrested for allegedly killing a former police official in Nonthaburi province. The e MP reportedly dialled into a YouTube livestream to confess to the shooting. Chalong, a former MP from Nonthaburi, reportedly contacted political commentator Anchalee Paireerak shortly after the incident and told her that he had opened fire on Thongchai Yenprasert outside his office, BBC reported.

Thongchai sustained a gunshot wound to the neck and later died while receiving treatment at a hospital. His driver was also injured after being shot in the arm and hand. Following his arrest, Chalong was permitted to address the media at a police station. During the unusual press interaction, he tried to give his account of the incident while smoking a cigarette. Reawraeng claimed he never meant to shoot Thongchai Yenprasert, who was president of the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organisation or PAO, a local government body. He described the retired police colonel as a “good friend". Speaking to reporters after his arrest, Chalong alleged that Thongchai was “angry" with him but offered no explanation for the dispute, the report claimed.

Chalong said he approached Thongchai to discuss the matter, but claimed Thongchai pushed him away. “He [Thongchai] then pushed me, saying ‘I don’t want to talk, I don’t want to talk,'" the e lawmaker stated. He added that he followed Thongchai to his vehicle and drew his weapon. “When I pulled the gun out, I didn’t intend to shoot him. But then [Thongchai’s driver] pulled his gun out and pointed it at me, so I fired." Before his arrest, Chalong reportedly called political commentator Anchalee Paireerak during her YouTube livestream and confessed. The incident comes days after a separate mass shooting, intensifying calls for tighter gun controls in Thailand.
