The meeting came a day after Dinesh Trivedi held a one-on-one meeting with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman. The Foreign Minister was also present during Monday’s meeting with Tarique Rahman. The diplomatic engagements assume significance as relations between India and Bangladesh have come under renewed strain following Sheikh Hasina’s virtual address from New Delhi on August 5, marking the second anniversary of her ouster after a student-led uprising in 2024.

During the address, Sheikh Hasina said she remained determined to return to Bangladesh in December to put the country on the “right track" and restore democracy. She also acknowledged that she could face imprisonment or even a death sentence if she returned. Dhaka responded sharply to Sheikh Hasina’s remarks, with Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs registering a strong protest and condemning the statements. The ministry said such remarks had affected public sentiment and complicated efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation. Dinesh Trivedi, however, struck a positive note ahead of his meeting with Tarique Rahman. “I feel that when… when two leaders meet, a lot of problems are solved. Problems are sorted out when we talk to each other. And I have full confidence that people are together, and the solution will definitely happen… it will happen. I am very confident. There is nothing negative here; everything is positive," the Indian envoy said.

Speaking about Tarique Rahman, Dinesh Trivedi said the Bangladeshi prime minister was widely respected and described him as a “people’s person". “The Prime Minister of Bangladesh… we all respect him a lot. I have listened to his speeches many times, and he talks from his heart. This, I have seen. He is a people’s person. And our Prime Minister is also of the people," Dinesh Trivedi said. Sheikh Hasina fled Bangladesh on August 5, 2024 and took refuge in India after a political upheaval brought an end to her long tenure as prime minister. New Delhi has maintained that it had no role in organising Sheikh Hasina’s recent interaction.
