Jacy Maranhao ended up injuring his ankle. (Screengrab) A Brazilian footballer has unintentionally produced either one of the most tragic or hilarious – depending on which side of the fence you are – goal celebrations of all time. It was a celebration that ended in painful fashion for Coritiba defender Jacy Maranhão after he disappeared from view while jumping toward the stands during a Brazilian league match.
Maranhao had just put the ball in the net against Chapecoense, and seemingly giving Coritiba a 2-0 advantage. He was elated and proceeded to head toward the boards to celebrate with the supporters. He took a leap of faith and instead of reaching closer to the fans, the 29-year-old landed in an uncovered tunnel leading to the dressing rooms. An astonishing scene in Brazil as goalscorer Jacy accidentally jumped into the tunnel – only for VAR to then ruled the goal out 🤯pic.twitter.com/yGxOrXe6Hb— Men in Blazers (@MenInBlazers) August 9, 2026 The tunnel had been opened ahead of half-time, leaving a gap behind the hoardings. Unaware of what awaited him, Maranhão went over the barrier without seeing the opening and plunged down the passageway, leaving teammates and nearby staff members scrambling to check on him.
He eventually climbed back onto the pitch, but the fall had clearly left its mark. Maranhão was unable to continue after the interval and was later seen on the substitutes’ bench with ice wrapped around his ankle. The VAR Twist If the injury wasn’t enough, there was another twist to an already bizarre sequence. The defender’s goal was subsequently ruled out following a VAR review, with a foul identified in the build-up. Coritiba nevertheless held on for a 2-1 victory, although Maranhao’s celebration became one of the most memorable moments of the match for all the wrong reasons. The incident has a precedent at Coritiba’s Couto Pereira stadium. In 2014, striker Joel suffered a similar fall into the open tunnel while celebrating a goal against São Paulo.
