Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hosted India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 medal winners at his residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg and praised their performances, saying their success had not only made the country proud but would also inspire a new generation to take up sports. Interacting with the athletes, PM Modi said sportspersons had been among the groups he had consistently welcomed and met at his residence over the past 12-13 years. Videos of his interaction with the medal winners were released on Monday. “I have been here in this house for about 12-13 years now. If there is one group of people I have consistently welcomed and met in this very house, it is athletes," PM Modi said. He credited the athletes’ hard work over the past decade for India’s repeated successes at major sporting events. The Prime Minister said the medals won by the athletes could inspire youngsters much more effectively than messages about the importance of sports and physical activity. “We could have gone to schools and preached about the importance of sports and physical activity, but your medals inspire them far more than any such message could," the Prime Minister said.
‘You Have Inspired A Generation’ PM Modi told the CWG medallists that their achievements went beyond simply winning medals. “You have not just won medals, you have inspired a generation," he said, while praising the athletes for their performances. The Prime Minister also singled out boxer Lovlina Borgohain during the interaction. He praised her for objecting to a distorted map of India at a restaurant in Glasgow during the Commonwealth Games. Calling her action significant, PM Modi told Lovlina, “What you did was not ordinary, will be remembered for long." PM Modi Praises Mirabai Chanu’s Emotional Moment Weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu’s emotional reaction after her medal-winning performance also featured prominently during the interaction. Recalling the moment, PM Modi said, “Tears were streaming down. It felt as though a gold medal was dripping from every single drop of your tears." Mirabai Chanu explained that the tears reflected the difficult journey she had gone through over the previous four years, including injuries and family issues. She also recalled missing out on a medal at the Paris Olympics. “I was overjoyed and emotional that day. The happiness was overwhelming," Chanu said, adding that she thought about everything she had endured before finally standing on the podium. She said watching the Indian flag rise and hearing the national anthem made it impossible for her to hold back her tears. ‘Your Victory Is An Inspiration For Future Generations’ PM Modi said the athletes’ achievements should not be viewed only as individual successes.
