A convoy allegedly linked to Umar Ahmed, son of slain mafia don Atiq Ahmed, broke through the barrier at Nawabganj toll plaza on NH-19 without paying toll on August 8, police said. Toll staff who tried to stop the vehicles were allegedly threatened and nearly run over. An FIR has been registered. The incident occurred around 3:50 pm at toll booth number three, as Umar Ahmed was being brought from Lucknow jail to attend the funeral of his younger brother Abaan, who died in a road accident near Jhansi. Following the police escort vehicles, a white Mahindra XUV (UP 32NJ 1458), a black Hyundai Creta (UP 70 HP 8416), and roughly 25 to 30 more vehicles allegedly sped through the plaza’s boom barrier without paying, according to the FIR filed by assistant manager Jayprakash Yadav.
What Happened When Toll Staff Tried To Intervene? Computer operator Ajit and helper Anshuman Shukla, who were on duty at the barrier, attempted to stop the vehicles. The FIR alleges that occupants of the vehicles hurled abuses and threats at the toll staff, and that an attempt was made to run vehicles over them — staff said they stepped back in time to avoid injury. What Does The FIR Say About The Vehicles Involved? The assistant manager’s complaint lists the registration numbers of dozens of vehicles that allegedly skipped payment. The FIR states that the incident caused damage to government property (the barrier) as well as revenue loss. Nawabganj police have registered a case based on the complaint and begun an investigation, and say further action will follow based on the vehicle numbers listed. Why Was Umar Ahmed’s Convoy Traveling That Day? Atiq Ahmed’s youngest son, Abaan, died in a road accident while traveling to Jhansi. His brothers Ali and Umar were granted parole to attend the funeral and were being transported from Jhansi and Lucknow jails, respectively, under police escort.
Supporters of the Atiq Ahmed family reportedly followed the police vehicles in a convoy — it was this trailing convoy that allegedly failed to pay toll at Nawabganj.
