(AP Photo) World number one Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open after failing to recover from a right knee injury, putting another question mark over his preparations for the US Open. The Italian confirmed his decision on Sunday, saying he was not yet ready to return to competition despite working with his medical team. “After consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to announce that I need to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati," the Italian said in a statement released by tournament officials.

“My right knee has been bothering me and even though we have been working hard with my medical team, I have to accept that I’m not ready to compete yet. I’m very disappointed not to be able to play in Cincinnati. I can’t wait to be back next year and I’m now focusing on getting ready for the U.S. Open," he added. The Cincinnati tournament begins on Thursday, the same day the Masters event in Montreal concludes. Sinner had already opted out of the Canadian tournament because of his fitness concerns. The five-time Grand Slam champion had entered the North American hard-court swing on a si tournament winning streak at Masters 1000 level. When announcing his withdrawal from Montreal, the 24-year-old said he had decided to “prioritise my health".

Sinner’s absence from Cincinnati comes after world number two Carlos Alcaraz also pulled out of the tournament as he continues to deal with a wrist injury. The Cincinnati Open and Montreal Masters represent the two major warm-up events before the season’s final Grand Slam, the US Open, which gets underway in New York on August 30. Sinner has not competed since successfully defending his Wimbledon title last month. Alcaraz, meanwhile, has been sidelined since withdrawing from the Barcelona Open in mid-April. The two rivals met in last year’s US Open final, where the 23-year-old Spaniard beat Sinner in four sets.
