The meeting assumes significance as India and Bangladesh attempt to rebuild a working relationship following the political upheaval that brought down Hasina’s government in August 2024. Her continued stay in India and her recent media interaction from New Delhi have repeatedly emerged as contentious issues between the two neighbours. The latest controversy erupted after Hasina addressed a media gathering in Delhi, where she criticised Bangladesh’s current political leadership and spoke about her plans to return to the country.
Dhaka objected to the event and sought clarification from New Delhi over the former prime minister’s activities from Indian soil. India, however, has sought to distance itself from the event. The Ministry of External Affairs has maintained that the programme was organised by a private entity and that the Indian government had neither nor participated in it. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India had “no involvement in the event" and did not endorse the views expressed during it. The clarification was aimed at making it clear that Hasina’s statements should not be interpreted as representing the Indian government’s position. But the episode has added another layer of strain to a relationship already complicated by Hasina’s extradition request. Bangladesh has sought her return to face legal proceedings, while New Delhi has so far not handed her over. It is against this backdrop that Trivedi’s meeting with Tarique Rahman becomes important. The Indian envoy has indicated that dialogue remains the way forward, saying that “problems are sorted out when we talk to each other". He has also described the bilateral relationship in positive terms, signalling that New Delhi does not want the latest Hasina controversy to derail engagement with Dhaka.
