The Indian Navy joined the operation, with INS Kalpeni reaching Muthalapozhi by Sunday evening to assist in the search. INS Kalpeni anchored offshore facing the Muthalapozhi estuary, with a Navy scuba team set to begin an underwater search on Monday morning. The team will focus on the extended section of the breakwater as well as the curved section of the estuary, where difficult underwater conditions have complicated the search. A professional scuba diving team from Vizhinjam had already been conducting searches in the area since Sunday morning. The team searched between the breakwater and among tetrapods and fishing nets lying in the estuary. With the sea comparatively calmer than on previous days, the divers were able to remain underwater and continue their search for a longer duration.
The operation has been particularly challenging because of the structures and debris present in the estuary. The Coast Guard has also been assisting the operation. A Dornier aircraft and a helicopter conducted surveillance flights over the area as part of the continuing search for Shijin. The fisherman went missing after the fishing boat capsized at Muthalapozhi. Despite repeated searches by local fishermen, divers and security agencies, there has been no trace of him so far. With the Navy now joining the operation, authorities are focusing on areas that may not have been accessible during earlier searches. The underwater search by the Navy’s scuba team is expected to cover the extended breakwater and curved portions of the estuary in an effort to locate the missing fisherman.
