A 52-year-old man was hacked to death in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur district, with police suspecting the killing may have been carried out in revenge for a murder last year, an official said on Sunday. Police said Shivkumar Tripathi was attacked on Saturday evening and later killed despite efforts by villagers to take him to hospital. A case has been registered, and several people have been detained as investigators probe the motive and the role of those involved in the attack. Read Full Story According to police, Tripathi was attending a 'brahm bhoj' or funeral feast in Ahirauli village under the Sikriganj police station area when he was allegedly attacked from behind with a 'banka' or cleaver by Rahul Chaudhary, a resident of the same village.
Eyewitnesses told police that Tripathi suffered serious injuries and collapsed on the spot. Villagers then rushed him towards a hospital in an autorickshaw. However, police said the accused, along with his brother Rohit, allegedly intercepted the vehicle on the way. Despite resistance from locals, the two allegedly forced Tripathi out of the vehicle, dragged him nearly 200 metres away and attacked him repeatedly with swords, killing him on the spot. Police said the preliminary investigation suggests the murder may have been committed to avenge the killing of the accused's cousin about a year ago.
According to villagers, Rahul's cousin Adesh Chaudhary was murdered in 2024, and some members of Tripathi's extended family were named as accused in that case. Investigators are examining whether Saturday's killing was an act of vengeance. Superintendent of Police (South) Dinesh Kumar Puri said on Sunday that a case has been registered in connection with the murder. Three named accused, and seven others have been detained for questioning, and police are probing the exact motive and the role of those involved in the attack.
Tripathi worked as a contractor for the electricity department, and his son Aditya Tripathi is an advocate practising in Gorakhpur civil court. The body has been sent for post-mortem. Ends
