(IMAGE: X) The Cessna C172 trainer aircraft operated by the Academy of Carver Aviation which was involved in a runway excursion at Maharashtra’s Baramati Airfield during a training exercise on Sunday, was unable to stop within the paved runway before veering into the grassy area beyond it. No injuries or fatalities were reported. The aircraft, registration VT-SEX, was being flown by Flight Instructor Capt. Chirag Shashikant Doifode with trainee Abhijeet Jundre on board.
It had taxied out at around 12.09 pm for a scheduled Circuit and Landing Emergencies (CL Emergencies) training exercise, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). As part of the exercise, the aircraft entered the runway through Link Bravo and first lined up at the threshold of Runway 29, where the crew carried out a rejected take-off exercise. Unable To Make A Complete Stop The aircraft then lined up at the threshold of Runway 11 for another rejected take-off exercise. During the course of the exercise, the aircraft was unable to come to a complete stop within the paved runway surface. It subsequently continued beyond the threshold of Runway 29 and veered off the extended paved surface towards the right, resulting in the runway excursion, the Press Information Bureau said in a statement. Trainer, Trainee Safe But Aircraft Sustains Damage The aircraft stopped in the grassy area beyond the runway.
There were no injuries or fatalities involving the instructor or trainee on board. The aircraft has, however, sustained prima facie damage to its propeller, engine cowling and nose landing gear, according to the PIB. A detailed assessment of the damage will be carried out by the competent authorities. The DGCA Air Safety team is proceeding to the site to conduct a preliminary investigation into the incident and determine the circumstances and contributing factors that led to the runway excursion. Further details will be released once they are verified, the aviation regulator said. The incident comes months after a trainer aircraft operated by another private aviation company made a crash landing near the Baramati airstrip on May 13 following a technical snag. No casualties were reported in that incident either. Baramati had also witnessed a fatal aviation accident on January 28, when a private charter aircraft carrying then Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and four others crashed near the airstrip, killing everyone on board.
