The Koduvally Block Panchayat has described the latest C. Achutha Menon Memorial Award, presented to local self-government institutions in Kerala for excellence in the agricultural sector, as recognition of its efforts to strengthen agriculture, improve farmers’ incomes and address challenges faced by the farming community. Block panchayat president Ambika Mangalath said the initiatives focused on making agriculture more remunerative and ensuring greater livelihood security for farmers.
Farm tourism and measures to address human-wildlife conflict were among the key interventions that contributed to the recognition, she said. According to her, the panchayat has farm tourism to provide farmers with additional income by developing farms as destinations where visitors can experience agricultural practices and rural life.
Fruit and spice cultivation, floriculture, fish farming, integrated farming and value-added agricultural products have been brought under the initiative. Local body representatives from the area point out that protecting farmers from wild animal attacks, particularly
in the hilly areas, has been another priority. The panchayat has supported preventive measures, including solar fencing, identified vulnerable areas and coordinated with various government departments to address farmers’ complaints and protect agricultural holdings, they add.
