Video of Vijayendra’s casual conversation on Bidadi Township goes viral

The Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party in general and its State president B.Y. Vijayendra in particular had to face embarrassment as a video of Mr. Vijayrendra purportedly saying that his party was extending “symbolic” support to the cause of the Bidadi Township Project and that the farmers are gradually accepting the compensation has gone viral. The video showed a casual conversation between Karnataka Minister Madhu Bangarappa and Mr. Vijayendra, who is also the MLA of Shikaripur, at a drought review meeting held in Shikaripur on Saturday.
The two leaders exchanged greetings and fell into casual conversation before the meeting started. Bangarappa is seen enquiring about the padayatra planned from Bidadi to Bengaluru over the Bidadi Township issue. Vijayendra replied that his party was extending symbolic support to the cause. “Many of those involved in the struggle over the issue are gradually accepting the compensation,” he is heard saying. The Minister responded that he was not following the issue closely. The video clip went viral on Sunday, the day the JD(S) began its padayatra with the support of the BJP on the Bidadi Township issue.
Incidentally, Mr. Vijayendra did not attend the programme marked to flag off the padayatra as he was on a drought tour to Kolar and Chickballapur districts on Sunday. The video that has embarrassed the party is learnt to have provided a handle to the anti-Vijayendra camp, which had been accusing him of being friendly with Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.
Speculation is rife that some of the party leaders have already forwarded the embarrassing video clip to the BJP Central leaders, expressing concern that such a casual stand of the party president at a time when the party is set to take up a fight against the Bidadi Township Project in the legislature session would affect the party’s morale.
