State softball body to conduct regional tournaments

Andhra Pradesh Softball Association on Sunday announced that it will conduct regional tournaments in Vizianagaram, Kadapa, Ongole and other places later this year in November and December. Amadalavalasa TDP MLA and the association’s president Kuna Ravi Kumar and the association’s State Secretary Sura Srinivasa Rao stated that the initiative is aimed at promoting the game which is one of the favourite games of people living in U.S., Europe and other places.
The association organised a training camp for umpires as well as players in Srikakulam over the weekend. An exclusive seminar has also been organised to make everyone know about the rules, regulations and others. Rao said that the Softball Association of India which got recognition in 1961 is keen to get back the glory for the game which can be played in small grounds and semi urban and rural areas also.
“With the suggestions offered by the national body, A.P. State Association wanted to hold regional tournaments to draw the attention of everyone towards the game. The game will also help players to get jobs under sports quota at the national and State levels. As many as 23 persons from AP got jobs under sports quota in the recently conducted DSC recruitment drive,” he added.
The association’s convener Mojjada Venkata Ramana said that all district Olympic Associations and sports bodies assured to promote softball and strengthen district level teams in a couple of months so that they would attend for regional tournaments.
