The Khar police on Saturday (August 9, 2026) arrested one person linked to a cybercrime racket that has allegedly routed ₹7.42 crore through 22 bank accounts in connection with 42 complaints across the country. The police were alerted about this after a complainant said that he was cheated of ₹4.07 lakh after being contacted on Telegram and promised high profits if he completed certain tasks online.
He was allegedly induced to transfer money to various bank accounts from time to time, but he did not get any profits or his money back. Technical analysis and data received from the national Cyber Helpline 1930 and Samvaye Portal helped the police identify the accused, Avinash Babasaheb Kharat and Vikas Gajanan Bhujbal. The police arrested and interrogated Kharat, which revealed that the accused opened bank accounts in their own names and in the names of other individuals across multiple banks and handed them over to cyber fraudsters to route money through, according to the police.
Of the 22 bank accounts that were identified, 13 were allegedly registered to Kharat and nine were under Bhujbal’s name. A search on the Cyber Coordination Portal revealed 42 complaints nationwide linked to these bank accounts. The investigation confirmed that transactions totalling approximately ₹7.42 crore were traced through the accounts. A case was registered at the Khar Police Station under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and with Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the Information Technology Act.
Police are investigating other individuals allegedly involved in supplying mule accounts, beneficiaries of the transactions, and other financial transactions.
