(IMAGE: PTI REPRESENTATIVE) West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Sunday alleged that her car was attacked with stones by “anti-social elements" in front of police personnel while she was on her way to meet the family of a party worker who died after falling ill in police custody.

“Large stones were hurled at my car by anti-social elements, right in front of the police. The attack on the vehicle was so severe that if the windows had been open, my head would have been split open. We could have all been killed," Banerjee told reporters in Barrackpore. “I have never seen anything like this. What is going on? … The police are providing protection to the BJP," she alleged. Banerjee had visited the family of Birju Keot, a Trinamool Congress worker who died after falling ill inside a police lock-up in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district. Keot, the husband of former Trinamool Congress councillor Jeny Sharma Keot, was arrested by Halisahar police on Friday in connection with allegations including extortion and corruption.

He was subsequently produced before a Barrackpore sub-divisional court, which sent him to five days of police custody. Keot’s wife has alleged that he was brutally beaten and tortured while in custody before his death. The allegations have triggered political tensions in the area. During her visit to the family on Sunday, Banerjee accused the police of failing to protect her convoy and alleged that the incident took place in full view of police personnel.
