United States Vice President JD Vance (Source: Reuters) Strait Of Hormuz Update: US Vice President JD Vance has said Iran has assured Washington that it has no plans to close the Strait of Hormuz, but stressed that the US will rely on Tehran’s actions rather than its words before accepting the assurance. Speaking to Fox News on Saturday in America, Vance said Washington expects the movement of oil and gas through the Gulf to return to the levels seen before the conflict. “The Iranians have told us they have no plans to toll the Strait of Hormuz. But again, we’re going to see what actions actually happen," Vance said.
He added that while some voices within Iran have spoken about closing the strategic waterway, the US would follow a “we don’t trust, we verify" approach. US Seeks Safe Passage For Ships Vance said one of the immediate challenges is restoring safe movement for commercial vessels. He pointed to mines that Iran allegedly placed at the beginning of the conflict and said these would have to be cleared before a safe shipping system could operate. “What we’re really working through now is how you can actually set up a traffic scheme so that the ships that pass can pass through safely. That includes, of course, demining," he said. Washington is also seeking assurances that commercial vessels will not be targeted. “We want a commitment from the Iranians that they’re not going to fire at commercial vessels," Vance said. Iran Lists Conditions For Reopening Hormuz Tehran has also laid out its conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Supreme Security Council has said the waterway will reopen only after the US “corrects its behaviour" and provides a guarantee that it will not threaten Iran.
Iran has also demanded a permanent end to the conflict, removal of the naval blockade from its ports and the withdrawal of US military forces. Other demands include compensation for war-related damage, the lifting of sanctions and the unconditional release of frozen Iranian assets. UAE Says Iran Targeted ADNOC Tanker The issue has also become more serious following concerns over attacks on commercial shipping. The UAE said on Saturday that Iran targeted a tanker belonging to state-owned Abu Dhabi Oil Company (ADNOC) while it was travelling through the Strait of Hormuz. Vance said Washington wants Tehran to guarantee that merchant vessels will not come under attack. Oman Talks On Strait Continue Meanwhile, Iran and Oman are engaged in talks over arrangements for the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has indicated that an agreement with Oman on managing the waterway is close, although it would not by itself be enough to fully reopen the strait. Vance said there had been some progress in recent days but maintained that Washington would wait to see what Iran actually does.
