(AFP file photo) Iran has ruled out an immediate resumption of negotiations with the United States, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi saying Tehran will not return to talks until Washington addresses what Iran describes as violations of a memorandum of understanding (MoU). The latest position comes as Iran also insists that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the US accepts its demands. ‘No Negotiations’ With US Araghchi said Iran is currently not holding direct negotiations with the US. Instead, messages are being exchanged through intermediaries attempting to create conditions for talks to resume.

“We currently have no negotiations with the United States. Intermediaries are still making efforts to find ways to resume negotiations," Araghchi said. He said Tehran would not consider restarting negotiations until Washington stopped what Iran calls violations of the MoU and compensated it for those breaches. “This is not called ‘negotiation’, it’s an ‘exchange of messages’," Iran’s position stated, while intermediaries continue efforts to create the grounds for negotiations again. Iran is seeking reparations for war-related damage and what it says were violations of the MoU. Hormuz To Stay Closed Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz would not be reopened until the United States accepts all of Tehran’s conditions. “Our current strategy is to maintain this strait until the enemy accepts all our conditions," Guards spokesman Hossein Mohebi said, according to Iranian state television. He added that the strait was now “a theatre of war for us and not just a waterway". Iran’s Supreme Security Council has separately said the waterway will remain closed until the US “corrects its behaviour".

Iran’s Six Demands The council’s secretary, Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, who is also a commander in the Revolutionary Guard, listed six demands. Iran wants the US and its allies to stop all threats against Iran. It also wants military operations against Iran and its allies to end permanently. Tehran is demanding the withdrawal of US naval and air forces from the area and the lifting of the blockade on Iranian ports. Iran has also called for compensation for war-related damage, the removal of all sanctions and the unconditional release of all frozen Iranian assets. The US must also never threaten Iran again and permanently end the war with Iran and its armed allies in the region, according to the statement. What The MoU Says There was no immediate comment from the US, which has wanted an acceptable agreement on the Strait of Hormuz before ending the blockade. Under the interim deal signed in June, a schedule to end sanctions and a plan for compensation would form part of the final agreement.
