Various women organisations staged protests against the State government’s decision to permit beach shacks and alleged sale of liquor along the beaches, at the Maddilapalem Junction here on Saturday (August 8, 2026). Representatives of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), Federation of Indian Women (NFIW), Progressive Organisation for Women (POW), and others participated in the protest wearing black clothes as a mark of opposition.
Speaking at the protest, B. Padma from the AIDWA said that Visakhapatnam has earned a reputation as a peaceful and popular tourist destination where people, particularly families, can spend time.
Turning its beaches into centres for liquor consumption in the name of tourism development would have serious social and environmental consequences, she said, urging the people to unitedly oppose any
move to promote a liquor culture on the city’s beaches. She warned that the decision could adversely affect women’s safety, the future of youth, and the image of the city.
