GBA bans POP idols ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi

With Ganesh Chaturthi approaching, the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has prohibited the production, sale and immersion of Ganesh idols made of Plaster of Paris (POP) and other non-biodegradable materials across the city. The civic body has also barred the immersion of idols painted with chemical paints containing heavy metals in lakes, wells, and other water sources.
“The restrictions were necessary to prevent the pollution of water bodies. Every year, idols are immersed in lakes, wells and other water sources across Bengaluru after the festivities. POP, chemical paints and artificial decorations used on the idols can pollute the water and soil and pose a threat to aquatic life,” Special Commissioner (Forest, Environment and Climate Change) Sushama Godbole said.
Godbole has asked the Commissioners of the five corporations to enforce the restrictions. Those violating the directions will face legal action under the Environment (Protection)
Act.
