The Indian government has issued strict instructions to Meta, directing the company to comply with Indian laws and prioritize India-specific content moderation rather than relying solely on global rules. In deliberations with Meta, the government emphasized zero tolerance for child sexual abuse material on its platforms. The government directed Meta to implement proactive detection measures, establish a human-in-the-loop system, and ensure that removed deepfake content does not reappear.
Additionally, Meta was told that genuine content must not be falsely labeled as deepfakes, and while a full algorithm overhaul is not required, algorithms must be aligned with Indian laws to prevent illegal content.
