An Air India Phuket to Delhi flight experienced severe turbulence and a 300-foot plunge that injured 17 passengers. Following revelations that one of the pilots tested positive for doping after the flight, an aviation expert clarified that doping or drug traces cannot cause atmospheric turbulence. The expert explained that clear air turbulence is an inherent natural flying risk that cannot be detected by aircraft weather radar or prevented by pilot actions.
Addressing pilot screening, the expert noted that mandatory pre-flight doping tests are not standard globally and mentioned that loosely regulated food items, veterinary products, or unverified medicines in India could potentially lead to unintentional positive test results. The broadcast highlighted major passenger safety risks associated with pilot doping, including impaired judgment, reduced situational awareness, slower emergency reaction times, and compromised cockpit coordination. Air India has not yet received the formal doping report as the investigation into the incident continues.
