Israel Cancels All Military Leaves: Is Netanyahu Preparing A Fresh Strike On Iran Amid Talks With US? Published By, Last Updated: August 09, 2026, 12:04 IST Israel cancels military leaves amid reports Netanyahu is preparing a fresh Iran strike as Tehran holds talks with the US over Hormuz. US President Donald Trump and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu (Reuters/File) Israel’s military has reportedly cancelled all military leaves amid signs that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could be preparing a fresh strike on Iran. The move comes as Israel is reportedly preparing for unilateral military action against Tehran, after concluding that the United States is no longer willing to pursue the war on its terms, according to Israeli Channel 13. US seeks exit, Israel weighs solo action The United States is reportedly looking for a way out of the conflict. US Gen Dan Caine is “looking for an off ramp" and believes airpower alone will not be enough to defeat Iran.
Israel, meanwhile, reportedly sees US diplomacy as a dead end and is preparing to act on its own. The assessment comes as Israel believes Iran has managed to outlast the campaign. Reports also say Netanyahu has ordered assassination strikes against senior regime and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officials. A unilateral Israeli operation would, however, make Israel Iran’s primary target in this phase of the conflict. Iran threatens Haifa, Tel Aviv Iran has already warned that it could target Israel’s Haifa refinery and Tel Aviv directly if Israel escalates. Israel’s interceptor stocks are reportedly critically low, leaving the country exposed to the retaliation that a fresh strike could trigger. Tehran has previously demonstrated its ability to penetrate Israeli air defences during missile barrages. A unilateral Israeli attack could therefore invite an Iranian response capable of overwhelming Israel’s depleted air-defence capabilities. Netanyahu’s political calculations The decision to strike Iran is also being viewed through the political situation facing Netanyahu. With October elections approaching, Netanyahu needs a victory to strengthen his political standing.
A strike on Iran is being described as his last card. However, Iran has already demonstrated that it can withstand US strikes and emerge stronger. Israel acting independently could therefore highlight its inability to defeat Iran without American backing. Why has IDF cancelled all leaves? According to reports, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) has officially cancelled all military leaves. The move has drawn attention because Israel took a similar step on February 26. That came just 48 hours before strikes targeting the compound of Iran’s Supreme Leader. The latest decision has therefore raised the possibility that Israel could be preparing for another major operation. The pattern of cancelling military leaves ahead of previous strikes suggests that high-level operations or a major escalation could be underway. Iran’s fresh demands to end war The reports of a possible fresh strike come as Iran has laid out a new set of tough demands to the United States as talks continue over reopening the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest oil shipping routes.
