Speculation surrounds a potential reunion of the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections. The developments follow Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and backing the central government's delimitation plan and Women's Reservation Bill.
The two parties had formalized their long-standing alliance in 1996 but split in 2020 over the farm laws protests. With both parties facing reduced electoral strength in recent state and Lok Sabha elections, joining forces aims to combine SAD's rural Sikh support with BJP's urban Hindu voter base to gain a stronger electoral advantage in Punjab.
