FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe said inspections of Chinese food outlets will begin soon, with officials focusing on food quality and hygiene. Speaking during an interaction in Pune, Mundhe said the department had received several complaints calling for scrutiny of Chinese food vendors operating in cities and towns. “Following public complaints, we will soon examine the quality of food served and ingredients used at these stalls," he said. Mundhe also recalled having Chinese street food for the first time in Pune several years ago. Referring to the city’s well-known roadside food culture, he said he wanted to visit such outlets again and assess their present condition from a food safety perspective.

The proposed inspections are expected to cover hygiene practices, food storage and the quality and safety of ingredients used at roadside stalls and eateries, officials said. The drive will focus on ensuring that food outlets comply with food safety regulations and that unsafe food is not sold. “Our priority is to ensure that citizens get safe, quality food. Public participation is equally important, and every complaint received through the portal will be examined," Mundhe said. The FDA has stepped up enforcement activities across Maharashtra over the past two months since Mundhe assumed charge as commissioner. The department has conducted raids targeting food adulteration, counterfeit products and illegal gutkha.
