Machu Picchu and Honduras’ Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve are among Latin America’s most precious World Heritage sites, but both are under growing pressure. Tourism, climate change, illegal logging, cattle ranching, mining and drug trafficking are threatening their survival.
In Peru, rising visitor numbers are accelerating erosion and putting pressure on Machu Picchu’s fragile landscape and infrastructure. In Honduras, deforestation and illegal activity are destroying rainforest and putting indigenous communities and wildlife at risk.
Local communities, archaeologists and authorities are working to protect the sites, but resources remain limited. The UNESCO says preserving these treasures requires cooperation between governments, communities and the international community. So, can Latin America protect its natural and cultural heritage before some of it is lost?
