Why Is Iran Keeping Hormuz Strait Closed? Iran said that the Strait of Hormuz will remain shut until the United States meets its conditions. The Supreme Security Council, Iran’s powerful security body, issued the position through its secretary, Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, who is also a commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The United States had wanted an acceptable arrangement for managing traffic through the strait before agreeing to end its naval blockade, according to the report. What Are Iran’s Demands? Iran has put forward several conditions that go far beyond simply reopening the waterway. Tehran wants the United States to permanently end the war with Iran and its armed allies in the region. It also wants Washington to promise that it will never threaten Iran again. Iran is demanding that the US lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports and withdraw its military forces from the region.

Yes. Iran and Oman have been holding discussions on a possible arrangement to manage the Strait of Hormuz and the movement of vessels through it. Oman has been acting as a mediator in the talks. The Omani government said the discussions were continuing in a “positive and constructive atmosphere" and condemned attacks on ships in the strait. Iran had earlier indicated that it was close to reaching an agreement with Oman, but the latest demands suggest that major differences with the US remain. What Has US Said?
