(Photo Credit: X) Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro has strengthened his legal team by hiring a lawyer who helped defend music mogul Sean “Diddy" Combs in his high-profile criminal trial, according to court records filed on Thursday. The move comes as Maduro prepares to fight narcoterrorism and drug trafficking charges in the United States. Maduro, who has pleaded not guilty, is being held in a federal detention facility in Brooklyn while awaiting trial.
The former Venezuelan leader is due back in a Manhattan federal court on June 30, when his lawyers are expected to outline efforts to have the charges dismissed. High-profile addition to defence team The latest addition to Maduro’s defence is Anna Estevao, a lawyer at Harris Trzaskoma who was part of the team that represented Combs during his criminal trial. Estevao gained attention for her cross-examination of key prosecution witness Casandra Ventura, Combs’ former girlfriend. Combs was acquitted of the most serious charges against him, including sex trafficking and racketeering, though he was convicted on lesser prostitution-related offences and is currently appealing both his conviction and sentence. Estevao joins Maduro’s existing legal team just days after veteran defence lawyer Barry Pollack moved to the same law firm.
Pollack has already signalled that he plans to challenge the legality of Maduro’s capture by US forces during a January raid in Caracas. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were captured by US forces during a January raid in Caracas and flown to New York to face criminal charges. Both have denied wrongdoing. Prosecutors accuse Maduro of using his position to assist international drug trafficking networks, allegations he rejects.
