BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah offered prayers at the Arunachaleswar Temple and Sri Ramana Ashram in Tiruvannamalai town on Saturday. Shah was welcomed by Tiruvannamalai Collector Vandana Garg and Superintendent of Police R. Uthayakumar at the Government Arts and Science College in the town, where Mr. Shah arrived by helicopter. The convoy proceeded towards the temple along the Girivalam path. Officials said devotees were not allowed to enter the temple during Mr. Shah’s visit and elaborate arrangements had been made. After offering prayers, Mr. Shah waved at the devotees who had gathered at the entrance of the temple.
Later, he visited Sri Ramana Ashram, a spiritual centre, on Girivalam path and offered prayers before proceeding to Puducherry by road. He will participate in the presentation ceremony of the President’s Police Colour to the Puducherry Police scheduled for Sunday morning. On his arrival at the Puducherry Lok Niwas around 8.30 p.m., he was received by Lieutenant-Governor K. Kailashnathan, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, and other Ministers and MLAs of the Union Territory. “He was earlier scheduled to travel by helicopter from Chennai airport to Puducherry on Saturday evening and then fly to Tiruvannamalai on Sunday around 11 a.m. before returning to Chennai.
The programme was changed for the Home Minister to interact with BJP functionaries in Puducherry on Sunday,” said a senior police officer in the Union Territory. Before leaving for Chennai around Sunday noon, he would also flag off the Har Ghar Tiranga yatra, an initiative of Centre to promote nationalism ahead of Independence Day celebrations in the country. President’s Police Colour event The President of India had on May 8 officially announced the conferment of the prestigious President‘s Police Colour (Nishaan) to the Puducherry Police in recognition of “exceptional service, discipline and distinguished achievements.” At the event to be held at the Police Training School ground at Gorimedu, Mr. Shah will hand over a ceremonial colour flag to the force, symbolic to the conferment of the President‘s Police Colour.
The Puducherry Police have organised several programmes, including a parade by different wings of the force, to mark the event.
