Mahato said he will commence the fast at 6 am on Sunday at the Old Assembly premises in Ranchi, India Today reported.
His move comes in support of students who have been demonstrating at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium and observing a hunger strike for the last 15 days over their demands related to the recruitment process. Efforts to resolve the JPSC-JSSC recruitment dispute have so far failed to produce a breakthrough despite several meetings between the Jharkhand government and protesting students. Government To Hold Fresh Meeting State minister Sanjay Yadav said the government will meet a delegation of students again at noon on Sunday. The talks are expected to focus on the protesters’ demands and ways to end the ongoing agitation. Meanwhile, Mahato said his one-day waterless fast on August 9 is aimed at adding momentum to the students’ campaign and pushing the government to act on their demands.
Mahato also warned that the agitation could intensify after the Assembly session ends on August 12. He said he would step up his participation if the students’ concerns remain unresolved. The recruitment dispute has led to sustained protests in Jharkhand, with students raising allegations of irregularities and delays in the JPSC-JSSC recruitment process. Several political leaders and groups have backed the protesters, increasing pressure on the state government. The students have been on an indefinite hunger strike for nearly two weeks, while previous discussions with officials have failed to yield a final agreement. They have also announced plans to march towards the Assembly on August 10. The prolonged hunger strike has raised concerns over the health of some protesters.
