As the world hurtles towards 1.5℃ warming, and energy crisis upends livelihoods, industry experts on World Environment Day urged governments, businesses and communities to move beyond sustainability pledges towards measurable action. From climate-resilient infrastructure, and responsible urban development to water security, they emphasised the need for tangible outcomes that can create lasting environmental impact. “Climate action must move beyond awareness campaigns and become a national development priority. Governments must place green skills, climate innovation, and sustainability at the centre of education, skilling, and economic policy. Corporate leaders must move from commitments to measurable action by reducing carbon footprints, conserving water, and investing in sustainable operations and supply chains," said Manav Subodh, Curator of 1.5 Matters.
The focus has once shifted to sustainability, with countries struggling to wade through energy disruptions due to the rising geopolitical tensions. This has been made worse by increasing temperatures and severe heatwaves which have upended lives and livelihoods, and strained the power grids. “The transition to a more sustainable future will depend not only on bold vision but also on the capability to deliver change at scale. Net-zero commitments, climate adaptation strategies, and sustainable development goals create value only when translated into disciplined delivery and measurable outcomes," remarked Amit Goyal, Regional Managing director of Southasia, Project Management Institute. With many cities already entering the red zone, and the water crisis unfolding silently, the industry experts said rainwater harvesting, water conservation, and local water solutions also need immediate citizen participation. “This year’s UN World Environment Day theme reaffirms a foundational truth: ecological restoration and community resilience are not just parallel pursuits they are actually one. Lasting progress demands deeper convergence between industry, policymakers, and communities to protect natural resources," said Mahesh Babani, Chairman & Managing Director, Privi Speciality Chemicals Limited.

More cities are now reeling under extreme heat stress for a longer period than ever before. “The built environment today accounts for nearly 37 per cent of global energy-related carbon emissions, a sobering reminder that how we build is now as critical as what we build. The question before us is no longer whether development will occur or not, but whether it will be pursued with the foresight, wisdom, and responsibility required to endure for generations," said Minal Srinivasan, Managing Director of Kesari Infrabuild Private Limited. According to Pavan Kumar, Founder & CEO, White Lotus Group, World Environment Day is a reminder that sustainability in real estate cannot be a symbolic gesture or something we add at the end of a project. “It is in how we look at land, how much we choose to build, how much we choose to leave open, and how respectfully a community responds to its natural surroundings," he said.
