Kerala Veer Sarvakar Row A school quiz question on Vinayak Damodar Savarkar has triggered a political dispute in Kerala, with the state government ordering an inquiry and leaders from the Left and BJP taking opposing positions on the issue. The controversy centres on a question asked during a Freedom Quiz for lower primary students in schools in the Kasaragod district. The question asked students to identify the freedom fighter who had received the “most severe punishment" from the British, with Savarkar listed as the answer. The quiz was conducted on August 6 in the Kumbla and Manjeshwar sub-districts, according to PTI. Government Orders Probe Into Quiz Kerala General Education Minister N Samsudheen has directed the Director of General Education to investigate how the question was included in the quiz and identify those responsible. The Education Department has maintained that the quiz was not officially authorised. The minister’s office said it was not part of the approved activity calendar of either the Social Science Club or the General Education Department.
The department has also been asked to determine who prepared the questionnaire and conducted the competition. Teachers associated with the Social Science Club were reportedly involved in preparing the questions. Left Attacks UDF Government The question has drawn sharp criticism from the CPI(M) and Left-affiliated student and youth organisations. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan accused the Congress-led UDF government of working with the RSS and alleged that attempts were being made to alter the historical narrative surrounding Savarkar. Vijayan also alleged that efforts were underway to “rewrite history" and linked the controversy to the Centre’s push to implement its new education policy in Kerala. General Education Minister V Sivankutty accused the government of trying to “saffronise" the state’s education system. He demanded a detailed inquiry, action against those responsible and the withdrawal of the disputed question and answer. The SFI and DYFI also criticised the quiz, alleging that the question sought to portray Savarkar in a favourable light. IUML Leader Seeks Serious Examination Senior Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader and former minister M K Muneer also criticised the portrayal of Savarkar as a patriot, calling it part of what he described as the RSS-BJP agenda. However, Muneer said the matter should be properly investigated and those responsible should be identified rather than being dismissed as a minor issue. Rajeev Chandrasekhar Hits Back Amid the criticism, BJP Kerala president Rajeev Chandrasekhar defended Savarkar and accused opponents of trying to alter history in the state’s education system.
