(File) Leaders of the INDIA bloc are set to meet in the national capital on June 8 in a bid to project Opposition unity, but the gathering is likely to proceed without the DMK, whose relations with the Congress have deteriorated following recent political developments in Tamil Nadu.
Around 17 Opposition parties are expected to participate in the meeting, which will bring together several key leaders from across the country to discuss strategy both inside and outside Parliament. The DMK’s absence is expected to draw attention amid growing friction with the Congress after the latter snapped ties with the ruling party in Tamil Nadu and joined hands with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to become part of the state government. Signs of the strain had emerged earlier when DMK Lok Sabha leader K. Kanimozhi wrote to Speaker Om Birla seeking separate seating arrangements for her party’s MPs in the Lok Sabha, away from the Congress benches.
In contrast, Trinamool Congress chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has often maintained a cautious distance from the INDIA bloc, is expected to attend the meeting. She is likely to be accompanied by her nephew and Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Several Opposition parties had recently rallied behind Abhishek Banerjee following an alleged attack on him in West Bengal, criticising the BJP over the incident. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren are also expected to participate in the meeting. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray are scheduled to be in Delhi for the discussions.
