(File Photo) Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) founder Humayun Kabir offered Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee a pathway back to the West Bengal Assembly from Rejinagar, months after breaking away from her party and campaigning for the overthrow of her government. Humayun Kabir, who won both the Nowda and Rejinagar Assembly constituencies in Murshidabad district in the 2026 elections, said he was willing to vacate the Rejinagar seat and facilitate Mamata Banerjee’s return to the legislature through the bypoll that would follow.
“If Mamata Banerjee comes to me, I can send her to the Assembly from Rejinagar. If she contests from Nandigram, she will not win. But if she wants, I will resign and ensure her victory from my constituency," Humayun Kabir said. The offer comes amid a turbulent phase for Mamata Banerjee and the TMC following the party’s defeat in the Assembly elections and the internal rebellion that has shaken the organisation founded by her nearly three decades ago. The political situation has been further complicated by developments in Nandigram, where Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari vacated the constituency and retained Bhabanipur, the seat from which he defeated Banerjee in the recent election. Humayun Kabir’s remarks mark a significant shift in tone from a leader who emerged as one of the TMC’s fiercest critics after his expulsion from the party last year.
Following a prolonged confrontation with the TMC leadership, Humayun Kabir floated the AJUP and repeatedly targeted the Mamata Banerjee government, calling for its removal from power. His new party went on to make an impact in Murshidabad, with Humayun Kabir himself winning from two constituencies. Despite their bitter political differences, Humayun Kabir struck a conciliatory note while speaking about the former chief minister. “The situation in which she finds herself today pains me. Whatever I am today is because of her," he said, adding, “Nobody may listen to her now, but in Rejinagar, Humayun Kabir is the final word."
