Representational image A four-month surveillance operation conducted by the Delhi Police Special Cell and Indian Air Force (IAF) counter-intelligence has culminated in the arrest of a 44-year-old serving Wing Commander. The officer, who was posted at a critical field unit on the Western Front, stands accused of leaking classified defence documents and sensitive strategic information to a Pakistan-based intelligence operative after falling victim to a social media ‘honey trap’.
The officer is currently lodged in Tihar Jail under judicial custody following his arrest under the Official Secrets Act (OSA). A comprehensive charge sheet was formally submitted before a court on July 30. The Social Media Trap Investigative details reveal that the officer was going through a difficult personal phase when he was approached earlier this year on social media by an operative posing as a woman. What began as routine messaging quickly escalated into regular phone interactions and video calls on an encrypted communication application. Over several weeks, the handler gained the officer’s trust, exploiting his personal vulnerabilities. Once a rapport was established, the operative coaxed him into photographing and transmitting confidential military documents, details regarding troop deployments, and strategic operational movements along the border. Malware and Breach Attempts Beyond leaking sensitive files, the investigation uncovered a further attempt to compromise military security.
The handler allegedly instructed the officer to install a malicious application onto a colleague’s mobile phone. This software acted as covert remote-access malware, capable of tracking real-time locations, intercepting communication logs, and extracting stored data from the secondary device. How the Joint Operation Unfolded The breakthrough began in January when the Delhi Police Special Cell commenced electronic monitoring of an international telephone number associated with Pakistani intelligence operatives. Intercepts flagged frequent, encrypted communications between that international number and a specific Indian mobile line. Upon identifying the user as an active-duty IAF Wing Commander, counter-intelligence units within the Air Force immediately placed the officer under close physical and digital surveillance. Once conclusive digital evidence was gathered, IAF authorities lodged a formal complaint and handed the officer over to the Delhi Police Special Cell on May 30. The Indian Air Force reiterated its strict zero-tolerance policy regarding security breaches and espionage, confirming that proactive surveillance measures successfully contained the leak before further damage could occur.
