The first Pink Line stretch could open soon and trials on Blue Line are planned later this year. For the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the clearance is an important step towards safety inspections, trial runs and eventual commissioning of the new corridors. Bengaluru’s metro expansion has received a key regulatory push after the Railway Board granted in-principle approval for the Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling and train control system for the Pink and Blue lines. The approval covers the entire 21.25-km Pink Line, also known as Reach-6, as well as the Blue Line corridors under Phase 2A and Phase 2B. The Blue Line will eventually connect Bengaluru’s major IT corridors with Kempegowda International Airport. For the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the clearance is an important step towards safety inspections, trial runs and eventual commissioning of the new corridors.
Pink Line: First Stretch Targeted For August BMRCL is now working towards opening the first operational stretch of the Pink Line in August 2026, subject to the necessary statutory approvals. Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has set August 2026 deadline for commissioning the 7.5-km elevated section between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere. The remaining section of the Pink Line will include a major underground corridor running towards Nagawara. The entire 21.25-km line is targeted for completion by March 2027. The Pink Line will provide an important east-west connection through some of Bengaluru’s densely populated areas and is expected to improve connectivity towards Bannerghatta Road and central parts of the city. Blue Line To Connect IT Hubs With Bengaluru Airport The signalling clearance is also significant for the Blue Line, one of Bengaluru’s most closely watched metro corridors. The Blue Line is being developed in phases and will connect the city’s eastern IT corridor with the airport through the northern part of Bengaluru. According to the current project targets October 2026: Trial runs are targeted on the KR Pura-Marathahalli section, with a possible extension towards HSR Layout.
June 2027: The Hebbal-Kempegowda International Airport section is targeted for commissioning. December 2027: The KR Pura-Hebbal section is expected to be ready for operations. Why The Signalling Approval Matters The Railway Board’s in-principle clearance is also an important regulatory milestone because signalling approval is required before the project can proceed towards statutory safety inspections by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). BMRCL has been coordinating with the Railway Board and the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) to secure the necessary approvals for the signalling system. What The New Metro Lines Could Mean For Bengaluru Once operational, the Pink and Blue lines are expected to improve connectivity across some of Bengaluru’s busiest travel corridors. The Pink Line could provide relief to commuters travelling towards Bannerghatta Road and surrounding areas, while the Blue Line is expected to be particularly important for commuters using the Outer Ring Road technology corridor and those travelling towards Kempegowda International Airport. The projects are therefore being closely watched as Bengaluru continues to expand its metro network in an effort to reduce dependence on road transport and ease chronic traffic congestion.
