Between 50,000 and 60,000 migrants crossed into Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta in less than 24 hours following a Supreme Court ruling on June 29, 2026. The court ruled that migrants reaching Ceuta or Melilla by sea cannot be immediately deported without formal legal process. Misinformation on social media falsely claimed Spain opened its borders, prompting thousands to swim or walk around coastal barriers from Morocco.
The surge overwhelmed Ceuta, a city of 80,000 residents, causing local business shutdowns and leading to at least 72 deaths according to Spanish authorities, while Morocco reported seven deaths. Most migrants voluntarily returned or were sent back, while hundreds of unaccompanied minors remain. Spain deployed its military, added police, and initiated the installation of a 500-metre floating sea barrier to close the legal gap. The crisis sparked European Union border checks, with Italy temporarily suspending Schengen rules with Spain.
