Legendary mountaineer Nirmal Purja, also known as Nims Dai, died after being struck by a massive avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan. His 10-member expedition left Camp 2 early in the morning toward Camp 3. Around 9:00 AM, an avalanche hit between Camps 2 and 3 at an altitude of 6,600 to 6,660 metres. Purja's Garmin tracker recorded him more than 2,000 feet lower 30 minutes later, showing the force of the avalanche.
Extreme weather, high altitude, and lack of long-line helicopter rescue capability delayed rescue efforts. The Alpine Club of Pakistan later recovered his body at around 5,700 metres, alongside three other unidentified bodies.
