In her first media interaction since being ousted in 2024, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced plans to return to Bangladesh in December and surrender before the courts. Addressing a virtual event in New Delhi, Hasina rejected criminal charges against her, including a death sentence issued in absentia by the International Crimes Tribunal over the 2024 student protest crackdown.
She demanded a ban on her party, the Awami League, be lifted. India clarified it neither organized nor endorsed the private event, maintaining a neutral diplomatic stance. Meanwhile, Bangladesh barred local media from broadcasting Hasina's address, citing existing court orders against publishing her speeches.
