Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Saturday (August 8, 2026) extended its support to the government, calling for the “immediate” implementation of women’s reservation and the delimitation exercise. Following a meeting of its senior leaders in Chandigarh, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal said the party demands the “immediate implementation” of the women’s quota. ”The Shiromani Akali Dal, at a meeting of its senior leaders in Chandigarh today, demanded the immediate implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the country,” he wrote in a post on X.

Supporting the Delimitation exercise, Mr. Badal said, “after detailed deliberations on key issues before Parliament, the Shiromani Akali Dal also demanded a fair and equitable Delimitation that ensures equal representation to all States.” “SAD supported the proposal which was put up by Govt of India at the floor of the house of uniform increase of 50% of seats of all states. The party emphasised that women reservation and Delimitation should be done immediately,” he added. Currently, the SAD holds one seat in the Lok Sabha, with Harsimrat Kaur Badal representing the Bathinda constituency in Punjab.

Badal’s statement comes after a day after he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (August 7, 2026), rekindling speculation about the possibility of an alliance between the old partners (SAD-BJP) ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly election. The ruling Democratic Alliance and the Opposition Indian Developmental Inclusive Alliance are firming up strategies with regard to the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill proposing to raise the number of Lok Sabha seats to 850 and initiate the delimitation process.

The NDA government’s sustained effort to secure a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha to pass the Constitution amendment Bill gained momentum after 20 Lok Sabha members of the Trinamool Congress and six MPs of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) aligned themselves with the BJP-led NDA.
