(Photo: PTI file) The student protests in Jharkhand intensified on Saturday as ABVP members marched towards Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s residence in Ranchi, demanding action on their concerns.
The protesters began their march from the State House but were stopped by police near Ranchi University Road along Morabadi Road. Police detained five ABVP protesters during the intervention. The protesters said they had been holding a sit-in at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium for the past 15 days but claimed their demands had not been addressed. They said they were forced to take out the march to reiterate their demands and press the government for action. Meanwhile, the Jharkhand government has been holding separate meetings with various student groups since morning in an attempt to address the ongoing protests. The Devendra Nath Mahto-led JLKM faction, JCM and NSUI have held separate meetings with the government.
The Adivasi Chhatra Sangh is also expected to meet government representatives later in the evening. Higher and Technical Education Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu, along with ministers Dipika Pandey Singh, Chamra Linda and Sanjay Prasad Yadav, represented the Hemant Soren government in the meetings held at the State Guest House in Ranchi. While the government has been hearing the concerns raised by different student groups, no breakthrough has been reached so far, with protests continuing in the state.
