Social media has coined the term 'luteal phase ugly' to describe puffiness, acne breakouts, bloating, and low self-confidence before menstruation. Gynaecologist Dr Geeta Jain explains that after ovulation, progesterone levels rise to prepare for pregnancy and then drop sharply, disturbing sleep, increasing skin oiliness, and causing water retention.
These hormonal shifts also affect the brain's calming system, making mood management harder and prompting women to focus critically on parts of their body they like the least. Doctors emphasise that these temporary physical and psychological changes are biology rather than a lack of willpower, advising women to consult a doctor if symptoms persist after their period begins.
