10-Yr Prostate Cancer Study Highlights Focal HIFU Benefits, Organ Preservation & Indian Adoption
A decade-long study involving 3,477 patients highlights the potential of focal high-intensity focused ultrasound, or HIFU, as a non-invasive treatment option for localized prostate cancer
A decade-long study involving 3,477 patients highlights the potential of focal high-intensity focused ultrasound, or HIFU, as a non-invasive treatment option for localized prostate cancer. Using concentrated sound waves guided by MRI imaging, HIFU precisely targets and ablates cancerous tissue with heat, creating rice-grain-sized burns while sparing healthy prostate cells. The analysis revealed extremely low prostate cancer-specific mortality and showed that most patients remained free from cancer spread after 10 years.
By avoiding whole-gland removal, focal therapy prioritises organ preservation, potentially minimising side effects on urinary control and sexual function. Experts note that HIFU is suitable for carefully selected patients, including those with early-stage disease, elderly individuals, or those unfit for surgery. Advanced diagnostic tools like MRI and fusion biopsies are improving early detection. The UK-tested HIFU technology is already available at leading Indian cancer centres, marking a shift towards more targeted and personalized prostate cancer care in India.
