Three people have been arrested for their alleged direct involvement in the murder of Congress leader and contractor David D'Souza at Padubidri in Karnataka’s Udupi district, police said on Saturday. D'Souza was shot dead at the St Xavier's Church Complex in Mudrangadi on August 7 afternoon. According to police, D'Souza had reached his office, Prince Enterprises, around 3.45 pm and was walking towards the driver's side of his vehicle when one of the assailants, who had arrived on a motorcycle, allegedly shot him in the head with a pistol.

A case of murder and offences under the Arms Act was registered at Shirva police station. During the investigation, police received information that three people allegedly directly involved in the killing were travelling by bus towards Bhatkal. The bus was intercepted near Ottinane in Byndoor, where the three suspects allegedly got off and attempted to flee. One of them, identified as Raju, 42, a native of Pilwa in Uttar Pradesh, allegedly pushed Kapu Police Sub-Inspector Tejaswi and opened fire at the police with a pistol.
Police retaliated in self-defence, hitting Raju in the leg before apprehending him and recovering the firearm, officials said. A separate case has been registered against Raju at Byndoor police station for allegedly attempting to murder a police officer and obstructing a public servant. The other two accused, Ajay Rastogi alias Anmol, 23, from Uttarakhand, and Jiyahul Wajul Sheikh alias Deepak, 38, from Bihar, were apprehended with the assistance of Kumta and Bhatkal police, respectively, on Saturday morning. PSI Tejaswi was injured during the operation and is undergoing treatment at Udupi District Hospital.
Raju is also receiving treatment as an inpatient, police said. Police suspect that D'Souza's killing may have been a contract or “supari” murder linked to a financial dispute arising from construction work undertaken by him. Preliminary investigation has indicated that D'Souza had differences with an out-of-state company over financial matters, following which his killing was allegedly contracted, police said. Ends
