The political battle over E20 ethanol-blended petrol has intensified, with Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi launching a sharp attack on the government's fuel-blending policy. Gandhi called E20 a major issue, alleging that it is hurting consumers, damaging vehicles and raising serious questions over the government's approach. He also described the issue as a "dal mein kala" controversy and said he would take it up across the country and in Parliament.
The BJP hit back, pointing out that the car featured in Gandhi's video is reportedly E20-compliant. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri dismissed the allegations as being taken out of context, saying only four contamination cases had been reported across more than 1.07 lakh fuel outlets and maintaining that India's biofuel blending programme is performing well.
