Rapid Read Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with former Punjab CM Amarinder Singh. (PTI Photo/File) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s description of former Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh as his “favourite politician" in the BJP has sparked a fresh political exchange in Punjab, with the veteran leader stressing that personal relationships do not alter his political commitment to the Bharatiya Janata Party. Rahul made the remark during an Instagram “Ask Me Anything" session aimed at students and Gen Z, where he was asked about his favourite politician from the BJP. “I get along with him; he is cool. He is an expert on military history. Hello, uncle Amarinder," Gandhi said. Rahul had launched the interaction on Thursday, inviting younger users to send him questions on Instagram. Sharing the initiative on X, he wrote, “Students, Gen-Z — I’m here to listen. Ask me anything on Instagram, and I’ll answer as many questions as I can." Amarinder Responds To Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Favourite BJP Politician’ Remark Responding a day later, Amarinder said it was “nice" of Rahul Gandhi to speak positively about him and pointed to the longstanding ties between the two families. The former Punjab chief minister said he had known Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi since their childhood and recalled that their father, former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, had been his classmate and friend.
At the same time, Amarinder made it clear that those personal equations had no bearing on his present political affiliation. He said personal relationships and political commitments were treated separately in most parts of the world and added that his family ties with Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi would continue even though he remained politically committed to the BJP. Amarinder cited an example from his own family to underline the point. Recalling that he was a Congress MP in 1980 while his mother, late Maharani Mohinder Kaur, represented a rival party, he asked: “Would that mean I won’t be getting along well with my mother?" Punjab BJP Targets Congress Over Rahul’s Praise Rahul Gandhi’s remarks also drew a sharper response from the Punjab BJP, which sought to link the outreach to the Congress’s internal troubles in the state. Punjab BJP senior spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal described Amarinder as “the tallest leader in Punjab", but questioned why Rahul was praising him now. Baliawal alleged that the Congress was facing “severe infighting and bickerings" in its Punjab unit and described the party as a “sinking ship". Referring to Amarinder’s departure from the Congress in 2021, Baliawal said Rahul should also remember the period when, according to him, the former chief minister’s contribution was not given similar recognition. “At that time, Gandhi did not value Capt sahab’s contributions for Punjab or even the service which he had also rendered for the grand old party. Now, when Congress is witnessing severe infighting and bickering and the Congress ship is sinking, Gandhi is remembering Amarinder Uncle," he said.
