(File image) The AIADMK has decided against participation in Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s all-party meeting on delimitation, which is scheduled to be held on Saturday. The meeting will carry a discussion on the Centre’s proposed constituency redrawing exercise that has been linked with the implementation of women’s reservation.

The DMK, which has been a vocal critic of the proposed bill, has also decided to boycott the meeting. The move reflects growing divisions among the state’s major political parties over the issue, sources told CNN-News18. CM Vijay had called the meeting at 3 PM today, August 8, to bring together Members of Parliament from Tamil Nadu to find a consensus and discuss a common strategy against the Delimitation Bill, which seeks to redraw constituencies based on the 2011 Census. Only the allies of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), including the Congress, VCK, IUML, and MDMK, will attend the meeting, said sources. The development unfolds as several reports suggested that the Centre is mulling reintroducing the delimitation bill that was defeated in the Lok Sabha in April this year.

Why South India Opposes Delimitation Political parties across south India have been criticising the proposed Delimitation Bill, arguing that the states will be left with relatively fewer parliamentary seats which amounts to a weaker representation in the Parliament. They also claim that northern states would gain a larger share of representation if such an exercise is done on the basis of population figures. The issue had triggered a major debate in the political landscape, with the DMK accusing the Center of attempting to sideline the southern states. Centre’s Push For Delimination The Centre has renewed its push for the proposed bill, holding discussions with Opposition parties, including the DMK. Earlier, Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi conveyed to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju that there was no change in their stance on delimitation.
