(Image source: ANI) A citywide inspection drive in Bengaluru by Karnataka’s Food Safety and Drug Administration Department has revealed serious problems with the hygiene situation in several luxury hotels. Establishments such as Taj Yeshwantpur and Shangri-La also reportedly had expired milk, rotten meat, and fungus-covered vegetables. The Food Safety and Drug Administration has now initiated legal action against these establishments found violating norms, according to ANI.

Karnataka Health Minister UT Khader said the raids aimed to enforce strict compliance with food safety norms across all categories of hotels. Inspections Across City The department deployed 30 teams of Food Safety Officers to inspect 26 three-star and five-star hotels in Bengaluru Urban district. The teams covered all Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) zones and checked compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, along with related rules. During the drive, officials collected 35 food samples for testing.

These included chicken, mutton, fish, edible oil, milk, spices, tea powder, cheese, tomato sauce and lemon juice. Authorities sent the samples to laboratories, and further action will depend on the results. Violations Found Inspectors reported multiple violations across hotels. They found unhygienic kitchens, poor storage conditions, expired food items, and fungal growth on vegetables. Officials also flagged improper handling of food, misbranded products, and violations of FSSAI labelling norms. Some hotels failed to separate vegetarian and non-vegetarian items properly. After the inspections, officials issued notices to the concerned Food Business Operators and said they would initiate proceedings wherever violations were confirmed. Authorities also seized and destroyed large quantities of unsafe or expired food. At The Lalit Ashok (Annex South), teams confiscated and destroyed 76 kg of meat, 200 kg of vegetables and 32 litres of expired milk. At Shangri-La Bengaluru, officials seized 15 kg of meat. Four Seasons Hotel Bengaluru saw 19 kg of meat confiscated, while Vivanta Bengaluru Whitefield had three kg of expired bakery items destroyed.
